George M. Poland

George Morrison Poland, of West Kingston, RI passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, February 1, 2019 at his home.

He was the beloved husband of Yardley Prettyman, of thirty years. Born in Gloucester, MA, he was the son of the late Warren and Edith (Holway) Poland and brother to the late Nancy Elizabeth Poland.

George was a graduate of Dartmouth College and earned his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Columbia University. He honorably served his country in the US Coast Guard. George’s curiosity led him to pursue many jobs and interests over the years, and what he loved most was connecting with people.

George was a loving father to his three daughters Alyssa DaFonseca (Joaquim), Sarah Poland, and Elizabeth Poland, and his three grandchildren Alora, Rocco, Luca DaFonseca. He also leaves behind his devoted four-legged friend, Ollie.

George enjoyed nothing more than digging into a good conversation - he could talk to anyone, anytime, about anything with genuine interest and a sparkle in his eye, especially if it was about sports or the weather! His heart was the most kind and loving, he cared deeply and loved fully. He was happiest outdoors, no matter the weather, especially with Yardley and Ollie by his side. George will be remembered fondly with his smirky humor, kind smile, and unconditional love for his family.

Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service Thursday, February 7, 2019 at 11am at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 55 Main St., Wickford.

Burial will be private at the convenience of George’s family.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of George can be made to the “Dartmouth College Fund – Financial Aid.” Please make checks payable to Dartmouth College, note gift is in memory of George M. Poland, II ’65, and send to Dartmouth College, 6066 Development Office, Hanover, NH 03755.
