Dr. Edward A. Grove, 79, of Saunderstown, passed away January 4 after an illness. Ed was born in Gainesville, Georgia. For 57 years he was the beloved husband of the late Maureen Szekely Grove who passed away in August. He leaves behind their children Edward Franklin Grove and Rianda Grove Levin, both of California. He is additionally survived by his brother John of Hawaii, sisters-in-law Linda Szekely Pero, Julie Szekely Quentin Branch, and Susan Szekely Edmiston; niece Julieanne Szekely, grandniece Bianca Szekely Huartson, and nephew, Jeremy Jacob Russell.
He received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Arizona and his PhD. from Brown University. He joined the faculty of the Mathematics Department at the University of Rhode Island in 1968, retiring as Full Professor in 2011. Over the course of his career, he published 63 papers, co-authored two textbooks, and had 4 PhD. students. His areas of research in algebraic topology and finite difference equations have been widely cited.
He and his wife cherished their life on the shore of Upper Pond of Narrow River. He was an early treasurer of the Narrow River Preservation Association.
