Rhode Islanders, against all odds, have kept an incinerator and the possibility of a huge port expansion from happening. Now it is time to ask three North Kingstown Neighbors (the Navy, QDC, and NORAD) to respect North Kingstown residents, other RI residents, and other businesses and return what they have taken from us: our night sky, fresh air, buffer areas, conservation land, wild life, natural views, peaceful quiet, which is also reducing our property value.
They have destroyed the conservation areas that were to be used as buffers between activity from QDC and residents; cut all the trees along the bicycle path; beautified our bicycle path with high dirt berms and huge three-story high “temporarily” stored piles of dirt; graced the lacrosse field with the same dirt; given us free lights like Fenway Park from dusk to dawn; noise six days a week, and most worrisome, free dirt particulates.
Most of the land at the North Davisville section of QDC is still owned by the Navy and leased to the Quonset Business Development Center (QDC) and QDC leases the land to NORAD. We bought our home in 1997. (QDC did not exist until 2004.) QDC now abuts our home. What is our new norm can become your new norm: noise from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., six days a week; view s of acres and acres of NORAD cars, free bright night lights; windows covered by plastic and black out drape to keep out dust and lights; oxygen tanks because lungs have been damaged by dust particulates; and no privacy. Why can this be your future? Because, neighbors, more excavation sites, asphalt and cars are coming.
The North Kingstown town manager’s job description includes being the public safety director. Please come to the North Kingstown Town Council Meeting, Monday, May 20, at 7 p.m. at the Senior Community Center and ask the North Kingstown town manager and elected officials to help stop the Navy, QDC, and NORAD from building more parking lots in our back yards, stock piling piles of dirt, exposing us to dirt particulates, noise, and sleep depriving lights and taking more and more land that was to be used as buffers of protection for us to build more parking lots for NORAD.
