The GFWC Women’s Club of South County’s 20th annual Book & Author Luncheon, held July 10, at the Dunes Club in Narrangansett, was a huge success. The amount of funds raised ($35,000) broke our previous record. All of the proceeds from this event — our only major fundraiser — find their way back to the South County community through scholarships for women in need and for community initiatives that benefit a wide range of South County’s population, from veterans and school children to people with disabilities. We partner with other nonprofit groups to tackle such difficult issues as domestic violence, homelessness, and hunger. We promote theater and other arts, environmental stewardship, and historic preservation, and our initiatives enhance programming at nonprofit institutions such as libraries, hospitals, and animal shelters.

We thank the event’s local sponsors for their generous financial contributions, the many caring businesses and individuals who donated raffle prizes, our numerous volunteers who put in countless hours to ensure the event’s success, and our attendees, who enjoyed an enriching afternoon devoted to books and authors while donating to a worthy cause. Thanks also to our major sponsors Brightview Senior Living, Wakefield, and The Seasons, East Greenwich, our master of ceremonies, Michaela Johnson, and our authors, Nancy Thayer, Lynne Heinzmann, and Bill Harley.

We are already planning for next year. Our 21st annual Book & Author Luncheon will be held at the Dunes Club on July 8, 2020. Tickets go on sale in early May. Visit, and click on South County to learn more.
