North Kingstown’s Matt Deignan has been named the winner of the Peter S. Cofran Award for his role as an assistant in the Plymouth State University Athletic Communications office, the school announced in its annual end-of-year awards presentation.
The awards program salutes eight students for their accomplishments on the field of play, in the classroom and within the Plymouth community. Presented annually, the awards are named in honor of former coaches and educators who were pioneers in the development of physical education and athletics at Plymouth State.
The Peter S. Cofran Award recognizes outstanding service and support for Plymouth State Athletics, something Deignan provided throughout his time in the department. The senior sports management major served the department as a statistician and public address announcer for 14 of the university’s 24 sports, while also assisting in the office with website maintenance, game program design and record-keeping.
“Matt has been a mainstay in the Sports Information/Athletic Communications office for the last few years,” said Assistant Director of Communications for Athletics Chris Kilmer. “He was always timely and professional, filled a ton of roles for the department and also helped teach a new wave of student-workers about the ins and outs of the job.”
